I received exciting news in December that Fairbanks High School is being nominated by the Ohio Department of Education for the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award. This is one of the highest awards that can be achieved in the United States and I would like to congratulate everyone in the district for their hard work in achieving this nomination.
Ohio is allowed to nominate fourteen schools each year for this award. To be eligible a school must be performing in the top 15% in Reading and Math. Ohio also has extra criteria which is a school must be performing in the top 40% racial, ethnic, and economically disadvantaged student achievement. Fifty-seven schools in Ohio meet these criteria. ODE looks closely at the numbers and evaluates the overall academic excellence or for the school's success in closing achievement gaps.
The U.S. Department of Education will honor 266 public and 49 private schools at a conference and awards ceremony in Washington D.C. Each school will receive a plaque and a flag to signify their status as a National Blue Ribbon School.
This is a tremendous accomplishment for our high school and community. This award wouldn't be possible without the dedication of our students, staff, administration and the continued support of the Fairbanks community.
As we continue to watch and trim expenses, I am also sure that many of you have noticed the construction going up and down Orchard Rd. Columbia Gas has brought natural gas down to our district. We have converted our old boiler system in the high school and middle school over to natural gas and reduced the boilers from 4 to 2. By doing this we can also convert the elementary school to natural gas from propane. This is much more efficient and the cost for the new system is paid for by the savings from fuel oil and propane.
Thank you all again for your support.
